Saturday 17 June, 11:00am.

Become a wine judge for the day as Chris Tyrrell guides you through a tasting of Australia's iconic wine "Penfold's 2010 Grange" against Henscke's Mt Edelstone, Thomas' Kiss & Tyrrell's Vat 8.

Real wine judges don’t get to see what the wines are so neither will you! If you name the wines correctly you will enter in the draw to win an Icon Pack valued at over $500!

Chris Tyrrell, along with sister Jane and brother John, make up the fifth generation of the Tyrrell winemaking family dynasty.

Chris’ first vintage was at age 18 in 2001, which was the first vintage after the passing of Australian winemaking legend and his grandfather, Murray Tyrrell. The apprenticeship had begun, ensuring that his grandfather’s tradition of “a Tyrrell in the winery, making wine” – remained unbroken.

From then on Chris has worked in the family company. In between vintages he worked in the sales and marketing department until the end 2005 when he returned to work full-time in the winery. Since then, Chris has been an assistant winemaker working with two of the great modern day Hunter Valley winemakers, Chief Winemaker Andrew Spinaze and Red Winemaker Mark Richardson.

In recent years, Chris and the rest of the Tyrrell winemaking team have focused heavily on improving, and in some cases, reinventing Tyrrell’s classic regional styles and single vineyard sites. Specifically, the flagship semillon and shiraz wines from some of the world’s oldest vineyards.

Chris is also an active judge in the Australian wine show circuit and runs the Hunter Valley Young Winemakers Group. In 2012, he was named "Rising Star of the Year" at the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Awards. Chris was also recently accepted into the fifth intake of the Wine Industry Future Leaders Program which focuses on developing the next generation of Australian wine industry leaders.

Cost: $84pp. Plus taste a selection of wines at your own leisure in Cellar Door for no extra charge.
